Federal government recovers 1.2 million-ton sugar export quota to the United States
The Presidency announced from Zacatepec, Morelos, the recovery of the export quota and the permanent incorporation of sugarcane growers into the Production for Well-being and Fertilizers for Well-being programs.
President Claudia Sheinbaum led on July 26, 2026, in Zacatepec, Morelos, the delivery of support to the sugarcane sector, where she announced the recovery of a sugar export quota to the United States of 1.2 million tons for the next production cycle, according to the official transcript published by the Presidency.
At the same event, the permanent incorporation of sugarcane producers into the federal programs Production for Well-being and Fertilizers for Well-being was made official. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), 136,389 sugarcane producers from 15 states receive direct support under these schemes.
The comprehensive plan announced by the federal executive includes plantation sanitation, improvements to irrigation systems, promotion of industrial consumption of the national sweetener and use of bagasse for clean energy generation. For Morelos, the delivery of harvesters intended for the Casasano and Zacatepec mills was included, as well as the construction of 502 kilometers of harvest roads in the state.
Relevance for Quintana Roo
Quintana Roo is not an industrial-scale sugarcane producing state; its sugar mill, located in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco (south of the state), processes cane from the region and from neighboring Campeche. According to SADER, the recovery of a larger export quota to the U.S. market translates into a higher reference price per ton of cane, which would indirectly benefit producers in the south of the state.
For the end consumer in Cancún, sugar is a basic input for the hotel, restaurant and bakery industries. The redirection of greater volume to the external market, combined with support programs, does not automatically translate into upward or downward variations in the local price; the National Market Information and Integration System (SNIIM) of the Ministry of Economy publishes weekly monitoring of wholesale standard and refined sugar prices at supply centers across the country, including Mérida, which is the closest reference point for the Yucatán–Quintana Roo corridor.
