Rain all weekend in Cancún: city deploys 30 crews, opens 24-hour WhatsApp line for reports
Crews have cleared 705 storm drains and handled 71 flooding spots; the city asks residents to report standing water at 998 778 4500.
The Benito Juárez city government has stepped up its rain response in Cancún and warned that rain is expected throughout this weekend. "We have a forecast of rain for the entire weekend," said Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, urging residents to take precautions.
What has been done
According to the city, the operation involves 30 crews with 195 workers, 25 vehicles and two specialized units (a Vactor suction truck and a drilling rig). As of the October 16 update, crews had:
- Serviced about 92 drainage wells.
- Cleared 705 grates and storm drains and 23 rainwater catch basins.
- Worked on 3 storm inlets.
- Handled 71 spots with standing water and reopened 52 streets.
Work focused on avenues including Nader, Yaxchilán, Xcaret, Cobá, Palenque, Bonampak, Andrés Quintana Roo, Leona Vicario, Lak'in, 135, Las Torres, Chac Mool and Niños Héroes.
Context: the season isn't over
This week, Quintana Roo's State Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC) reminded civil protection units in all 11 municipalities that the 2026 rainy and tropical cyclone season is still under way, and asked them to strengthen prevention ahead of the winter cold-front season. The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends November 30.
What to do this weekend
- Report flooding, blocked drains or saturated wells via WhatsApp at 998 778 4500 (24 hours) or through ChatCun.
- Don't put trash out off-schedule: bags swept away by runoff are a common cause of clogged drains. Follow your neighborhood's collection days and hours.
- Avoid crossing flooded streets on foot or by car; potholes, open manholes and the real water depth can't be seen.
- If driving, slow down on the avenues listed above, where water tends to pool, and turn on your lights.
- Make sure your roof downspouts and the drain in front of your home are clear of leaves and trash.
- Follow official updates from the city and state civil protection.
