MOBI Route 17 stops taking cash starting Tuesday: here is how to pay
From October 27, fares on Route 17 Leona Vicario are paid only with a MOBI card, a QR code or a contactless bank card.
Starting Tuesday, October 27, 2026, MOBI Cancún's Route 17 Leona Vicario runs on electronic payment only: cash is no longer accepted on board, according to the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO), whose director, Rafael Hernández Kotasek, announced the change.
The state government describes the route as the first fully urban line in the MOBI system in Cancún. It covers 44.05 kilometers from neighborhoods in the north of the city to Plaza Las Américas. According to IMOVEQROO, it serves 99 neighborhoods and 242,821 people, with buses every 5.5 minutes at peak hours and every 10 minutes the rest of the day. More than 16,000 people rode it on its opening day, October 19, the institute said.
Accepted payment methods
- MOBI General card, which costs 35 pesos.
- QR code generated in the MOBI App.
- Contactless debit or credit card.
- MOBI Social Fare credential for students and older adults.
Fares
- Standard urban fare: 15 pesos.
- Students and older adults with a Social Fare credential: 10 pesos.
- People with disabilities holding a Zero Fare credential: free.
Discounted transfers
IMOVEQROO explained that when riders use the same payment method within a three-hour window, the first trip is charged in full, the second gets a 50% discount, and the third and fourth are free.
What it means for your wallet: at the standard fare, four trips within those three hours would cost 22.50 pesos (15 + 7.50 + 0 + 0) instead of 60, as long as all four are paid with the same card, QR code or bank card. If you switch payment methods, the system will not register the transfer.
Where to buy or top up the card
According to the institute, there are 247 affiliated outlets: 101 sell and top up the card, and 146 only offer top-ups. They include OXXO, Dunosusa, 7-Eleven and GoMart stores.
Before you leave home
- If you do not have a MOBI card, buy one ahead of time; you will not be able to pay cash on the bus.
- If you plan to use the app, load your QR code before boarding so you do not depend on cell signal at the stop.
- If you pay with a bank card, make sure it shows the contactless symbol.
- To get the transfer discount, always use the same payment method.
- Students, older adults and people with disabilities must obtain their Social Fare or Zero Fare credential to access reduced fares.
