Quintana Roo Keeps 40-Million-Peso Insurance for Beaches and Reefs Against Hurricanes

The Government of Quintana Roo has kept in place for the 2026 season a parametric insurance policy of 40 million pesos aimed at recovering beaches and reefs in case of hurricane damage. Unlike a traditional policy, parametric insurance is triggered automatically when a phenomenon meets certain parameters —such as the hurricane's category and its distance from the coast— allowing funds to be released quickly without lengthy assessments.

The goal is to have money immediately available for restoration work: replacing sand, cleaning the coastal strip and tending to the coral reefs that act as a natural barrier against waves. This ecosystem not only protects inhabited areas of Cancún and the Riviera Maya, but also sustains much of the tourism economy that employs thousands of families across the state.

The Atlantic cyclone season runs through November, and the Mexican Caribbean typically sees its peak activity between August and October. Having a financial mechanism ready reduces the time a damaged beach stays closed or without sand, a decisive factor for hotels, service providers and businesses that depend on the flow of visitors.

For residents, having this insurance means that, after an impact, the recovery of coastal public spaces is not left solely to the ordinary budget or to processes that can take months. Keep in mind: regardless of this coverage, the best personal protection during the season remains keeping a family emergency plan, identifying the nearest hurricane shelter and heeding Civil Protection advisories when a cyclone alert is issued. The policy safeguards the natural heritage; preparedness at home safeguards people.
