Cancún Reaches 346 Peace Committees Across 172 Supermanzanas, Targets 600
The neighborhood participation program, launched in February in Villas Otoch Paraíso, aims to open a direct channel between blocks and the municipal police.
The Benito Juárez city government reported that 346 Peace Committees are now active across 172 Supermanzanas in Cancún, with a target of reaching 600 to cover the entire municipality, under a neighborhood participation scheme focused on security and the management of basic services.
The program was officially launched on February 5 in Supermanzana 259, within the Villas Otoch Paraíso development, and has since grown through sector outreach sessions, at which residents meet the operational staff of the Municipal Public Safety and Traffic Secretariat assigned to their area.
According to the municipal administration, the committees act as a neighborhood liaison to push improvements in street lighting, patching, tree pruning, garbage collection and police response. The official characterization of the program is that "peace is a shared task" between authorities and residents.
Sessions include identifying the quadrant officer or responsible officer, exchanging contacts and reaching operational agreements such as preventive patrols, attention to risky meeting points or lighting of streets where incidents have been recorded.
How neighborhood peace committees work. They are not armed bodies and do not replace the police. They are working groups of residents who coordinate with municipal agencies to file structured reports on the pending issues of their Supermanzana. Similar models operate in other municipalities under the National Strategy for the Social Prevention of Violence, promoted by the federal Public Safety and Citizen Protection Secretariat.
How a Supermanzana joins. Residents who want to request the installation of a Peace Committee in their sector can approach the municipal Citizen Attention Center or reach out to the Municipal Public Safety Secretariat. It is necessary to gather a representative group of the sector for the outreach session and be willing to appoint a neighborhood liaison.
Security context. Cancún is Quintana Roo's most populous city, with more than 800,000 residents, and its growth into peripheral Supermanzanas—where developments such as Villas Otoch Paraíso, Prado Norte or Los Héroes are located—has repeatedly outpaced police deployment capacity, a gap that proximity strategies such as these committees seek to offset with neighborhood information.
