Aguakan warns of low pressure and water shortages in Playa del Carmen after CFE power fluctuations

Aguakan reported on Saturday, July 26, that drinking water service in Playa del Carmen is running with low pressure and shortages in several sectors because of voltage fluctuations in the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) distribution grid.
The concessionaire said the electrical instability is tripping the protection systems of extraction wells and booster stations, which automatically shut down to prevent equipment damage. Aguakan described the incident as "a condition external to its operation" and confirmed that it is coordinating with CFE crews to restore normal electrical conditions gradually.
While the supply stabilizes, the company asked users to make responsible and rational use of the water stored in cisterns and rooftop tanks, prioritizing essential activities such as personal hygiene, food preparation and drinking. Aguakan recommended postponing yard washing, garden watering and pool refilling until service returns to normal.

Neighborhoods that typically feel these failures first are those that depend on booster pumps, including higher-elevation subdivisions and communities on the outer edges of Playa del Carmen. Aguakan did not publish a specific list of affected neighborhoods or an estimated restoration time; the company said service will resume gradually, as the electrical supply stabilizes.
These kinds of interruptions have become recurrent along the Riviera Maya during the hot season, when air conditioning use drives electricity demand higher. Power outages force hydraulic systems to restart pumping cycles, and it can take hours before the distribution network is refilled.
Tourists staying in Playa del Carmen are advised to check with their hotel's front desk to learn how the specific property is coping, since many resorts have their own cisterns and backup power that reduce the impact of the disruption.
