Pink October in Cancún: how to do a breast self-exam and where to get advice
DIF Benito Juárez and state health officials launched the breast cancer prevention campaign with self-exam workshops at City Hall.
Benito Juárez City Hall was lit in pink on October 9 to launch Cancún's breast cancer prevention campaign, with self-exam workshops, prevention talks and services from the Women's Comprehensive Brigade, the city government reported.
The event was attended by DIF Benito Juárez general director Marisol Sendo Rodríguez; state Health Secretary Flavio Carlos Rosado; CAPASITS Cancún director Isabel Villegas Mota; and Raquel Jiménez Jiménez on behalf of DIF's regional office. Survivors shared their stories and rang the traditional bell.
«Today Benito Juárez turns pink, but above all it turns into awareness and prevention», Sendo Rodríguez said.
According to official information, 12,927 mammograms have been performed in Quintana Roo. An information booth from UNEME DEDICAM, the state Health Department unit specialized in breast cancer detection and diagnosis, was set up to teach self-exam technique.
Self-exam in 5 steps (basic guide)
A self-exam does not replace a mammogram, but it helps you know your body and spot changes early. Do it once a month, ideally a few days after your period:
- In front of a mirror, with arms down and then raised, look at shape, size, skin and nipples.
- Look for changes: dimpling, «orange peel» skin, redness or an inverted nipple.
- Lying down, use your fingertips to feel each breast in circles, from the outside toward the nipple.
- Check the armpit, where lumps can also appear.
- Gently squeeze the nipple to check for discharge.
If you find a lump, persistent pain, discharge or any change, don't wait: go to your health center or family medicine clinic.
Where to get advice
- Your public health center or IMSS/ISSSTE clinic: they can refer you for a mammogram based on your age and history.
- UNEME DEDICAM of the state Health Department, for detection and diagnosis.
- DIF Benito Juárez: for information on campaign activities, the city listed the phone number (998) 881 28 00.
Why it matters
Breast cancer detected early has many more treatment options. October is when campaigns are concentrated, but medical advice is to keep up monthly self-exams and clinical check-ups all year round.
