Afores can charge at most 0.53% in 2027: 5.30 pesos a year per 1,000 saved, CONSAR says
The cap drops by one hundredth of a point from 2026. Here is how to check what your pension fund charges and how to switch.
Mexico's retirement fund managers (Afores) may not charge more than 0.53% a year on the balance they manage in 2027, according to a notice published by the National Retirement Savings System Commission (CONSAR) on October 23, 2026.
In practice, the cap means a maximum of 5.30 pesos a year for every 1,000 pesos in your individual account.
How it was calculated
According to CONSAR, the limit is set under Article 37 of the Retirement Savings Systems Law, which requires Mexican fees not to exceed the arithmetic average of what defined-contribution pension systems charge in the United States, Colombia and Chile. For the U.S., the regulator used the median cost of target date funds as a benchmark.
How it compares with 2026
For 2026, CONSAR authorized nine Afores to charge 0.54% and PENSIONISSSTE to charge 0.52%. The new 0.53% cap therefore means a cut of one hundredth of a point for most fund managers. Each Afore must submit its proposed 2027 fee, which CONSAR's board must approve.
What it means for your wallet
A round-number example to put the change in perspective (our own calculation, excluding returns and new contributions):
- With 100,000 pesos saved, a 0.54% fee equals 540 pesos a year; at 0.53%, 530 pesos.
- With 300,000 pesos, the yearly charge goes from 1,620 to 1,590 pesos.
The yearly difference is small, but the fee is charged every year over your entire working life, so the effect adds up.
What you can do from Cancún
- Check which Afore you are in and your balance in the AforeMóvil app or on the e-SAR website; you only need your CURP.
- Compare returns, not just fees. Since nearly all charge the same, the real difference between Afores lies in the net returns CONSAR publishes for your age group.
- You can switch Afores once a year without special requirements, through AforeMóvil or at a branch of the Afore you want to join.
- If you are self-employed, for example in tourism without social security, you can open an account and make voluntary contributions through the app or at convenience stores.
- If you see a charge you do not recognize, you can go to Condusef, the financial consumer protection agency.
