Cancún again has Mexico's priciest diesel at 28.29 pesos; local food basket ranges from 819.60 to 866.20, Profeco says

The consumer agency singled out a Fullgas station in Cancún and launched a price-comparison site ahead of El Buen Fin, November 13–17.

Diesel pump at a gas station

A gas station in Cancún once again posted the most expensive liter of diesel in Mexico, at 28.29 pesos, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) reported on Monday, October 26. The station is Fullgas Mar Caribe, which according to agency head Iván Escalante Ruiz operates with a margin of 2.47 pesos per liter.

It is the second time this month that the country's top diesel price has turned up in Cancún: on October 12, Profeco reported the same figure at a different station in the city, under another brand.

The national picture

As of October 23, Profeco reported a national average of 26.98 pesos per liter of diesel. 9,033 stations (87.9%) sell at 27.00 pesos or less, the cap set under a voluntary agreement with fuel retailers. The lowest price found was 26.89 pesos, with a 1.50-peso margin. The agency also added Premium gasoline to its price heat map, alongside regular (Magna) and diesel.

The food basket in Cancún

On the Anti-Inflation Package (PACIC) — 24 products capped at 910 pesos — Profeco said 93% of stores comply. In Cancún, the cheapest basket was at Soriana Híper (819.60 pesos) and the most expensive at Walmart (866.20 pesos): a 46.60-peso gap for the same list of goods. Nationwide, prices ranged from 750.00 pesos (Bodega Aurrera, Puebla) to 918.50 pesos (Ley, La Paz, Baja California Sur).

Day of the Dead bread and El Buen Fin

In its October 19–22 survey, Profeco found individual pan de muerto (80–100 grams) averaging 14.30 to 25.43 pesos, and family-size loaves (800 grams to 1 kilo) at 108.00 to 211.33 pesos.

Ahead of El Buen Fin, November 13–17, the agency launched elbuenfin.profeco.gob.mx, which lists prices for 490 products — mainly appliances — tracked since September 17 in 30 cities, including Cancún. The site includes a credit payment simulator showing the total annual cost (CAT).

What you can do

  • Before buying diesel, check Profeco's heat map; paying 1.30 pesos above average on a 50-liter tank adds about 65 pesos per fill-up.
  • Compare grocery baskets between stores: in Cancún the gap between cheapest and priciest tops 46 pesos.
  • For El Buen Fin, note today's price of the item you want on the site, so you can tell whether November's deal is real.
  • Complaints: Profeco consumer hotline 55 5568 8722 / 800 468 8722 or dudasportal@profeco.gob.mx.
