Mental health in Cancún: city DIF takes talks to universities — and where to get help
DIF Benito Juárez held a session with municipal psychologists at Universidad Humanitas; here are the lines to call if you or someone close needs support.
The Benito Juárez family welfare agency (DIF) held the event "Mental Health Day: Dialogue at Your University" at Universidad Humanitas' Cancún campus, with talks by municipal psychologists for students, the city announced on October 12.
The event was led by DIF director Marisol Sendo Rodríguez and the agency's Mental Health Coordinator, Erick Daniel Mayo Contla. Topics included practicing psychology in the public and private sectors, couples' health and its link to mental health, the difference between clinical and forensic psychology, and how family dynamics affect emotional wellbeing.
The event marked World Mental Health Day, observed every October 10.
Why it matters for young people
University years bring academic, financial and personal pressure. Bringing specialists into classrooms aims to help students spot warning signs in themselves and others, and to see asking for help as a legitimate option.
Where to get support
- Línea de la Vida: 800 911 2000. Free, confidential, 24-hour mental health and addiction line run by Mexico's federal Health Ministry (Spanish).
- Emergencies: 911. If there is an immediate risk to life, call right away.
- DIF Benito Juárez has a Mental Health Coordination office. For information on municipal psychological services, call the city switchboard at (998) 881 28 00 or visit City Hall (Av. Tulum No. 5, Supermanzana 5).
Warning signs
Marked changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawal, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, increasing alcohol or substance use, or expressions of hopelessness. Listening without judgment and helping the person reach professional help can make a difference.
