Cancún Sur cargo bypass breaks ground: 14.85 km, 3.07-billion-peso project set to open in 2027
Quintana Roo's governor launched the road that will link federal highway 307 with the Huayacán Avenue extension and the Tren Maya freight station; construction is being led by the Sedena engineer corps.
Construction of the Cancún Sur Cargo Bypass (Libramiento Vial de Carga Cancún Sur) began on July 25 with a groundbreaking ceremony led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The project aims to divert heavy traffic away from the city center and connect it directly with the new multimodal freight station of the Tren Maya and Cancún International Airport.
According to the official data, the project consists of 14.85 kilometers of new roadway, split into 9.6 km extending Huayacán Avenue and 5.25 km connecting to the freight station. It will feature two lanes in each direction, one bridge, one roundabout and one interchange. It will meet federal highway 307 near the pedestrian overpass of the Moon Palace resort.
The investment totals 3.071 billion pesos and the work will be executed by the engineer corps of the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena). The announced completion date is 2027. The governor estimated the bypass will cut rush-hour traffic inside Cancún by 20% to 30% by rerouting freight trucks and vehicles that today cross the urban core on their way to the airport or hotel zone.
What it means for Cancún residents
- Fewer trailers on urban avenues such as Tulum and Kabah, which currently serve as the truck corridor toward the hotel zone and airport.
- A new road option to the airport for residents of southern and southeastern Cancún (Huayacán and Alamos subdivisions), who now depend on the 307.
- Two years of active construction fronts, with possible partial closures and detours on federal highway 307 and the Huayacán extension as work progresses.
Context
The project was submitted to public consultation by Semarnat in April 2026, as part of its environmental impact review. It now moves into the construction phase. Linked to the Tren Maya freight station, the bypass will form part of the logistics corridor the federal government is pushing to separate tourist traffic from cargo movements.
State officials and Sedena representatives attended the launch. A detailed calendar of road closures has not yet been released, so drivers in southern Cancún are advised to watch official traffic notices before scheduling long trips along the 307.
