Cancún again has Mexico's most expensive regular gasoline, Profeco says
Federal monitoring places the station with the highest regular price in the city; here's how to compare before you fill up.
CANCÚN, Q. ROO. — Cancún has once again been ranked as the city with the most expensive regular gasoline (Magna) in Mexico, according to the weekly Who's Who in Fuel Prices report produced by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco).
The monitoring identified a station on Avenida Kabah, in Supermanzana 248, as the one offering the highest price in the country, averaging 25.39 pesos per liter of regular gasoline. That same station also reported the highest profit margin among the eight economic regions analyzed, at 3.06 pesos per liter.
Across Quintana Roo, a liter of Magna runs about 25.12 pesos, Premium sits near 28.83 pesos and diesel around 28.14 pesos — figures that place the state above the national average.
Why it costs more here. The final price of gasoline is made up of the reference price, taxes (IEPS and VAT) and the margin each station chooses to charge. In tourist destinations like Cancún, with high logistics and operating costs, that margin tends to be larger, which explains why the same fuel can cost several pesos more than in other cities.
What you can do. Profeco recommends comparing before filling up: its online platform and the Litro por litro app let you check the prices reported by each nearby station and pick the cheapest. It's also wise to confirm the pump reads zero before dispensing, ask for a receipt and demand full liters. If you spot an irregularity — such as not receiving the amount paid for — you can file a complaint with Profeco's consumer hotline. For the family budget, filling up at lower-margin stations or away from the hotel zone can mean savings of several pesos per liter.
