Mexico's most expensive diesel was sold in Cancún at 28.29 pesos per liter, Profeco says

The national average was 26.99 pesos and 87.7% of stations honor the voluntary 27-peso cap; the consumer agency also compared remittances and a basic food basket.

Diesel pump at a gas station

A gas station in Cancún posted the highest diesel price in Mexico, at 28.29 pesos per liter, according to the weekly survey released Monday, October 12, by Mexico's consumer protection agency, Profeco. The station belongs to Servicios Gasolineros de México, under the OXXO Gas brand, the report said.

What the report says

According to Profeco, as of October 9 the national average diesel price was 26.99 pesos per liter. Agency head Iván Escalante Ruiz said 8,966 stations, or 87.7% of the 10,220 monitored, are complying with the 27.00-peso-per-liter cap set under the National Strategy for Diesel Price Stabilization, a voluntary agreement with fuel retailers.

The lowest price in the country was 26.89 pesos per liter, at the Servi Fer (Pemex) station in Tecámac, State of Mexico.

What it means for your wallet

The Cancún price is 1.29 pesos above the 27-peso cap and 1.30 pesos above the national average. On a 50-liter tank, the gap versus the cap comes to roughly 64.50 pesos per fill-up; for anyone who drives a pickup, cargo taxi or delivery vehicle and fills up several times a week, the extra cost adds up quickly.

Remittances and the food basket

In the same report, Profeco compared sending US$400 from the United States on October 8:

  • Bank deposit or transfer: the best option was Finabien, delivering 7,301.01 pesos; the lowest was Ria Money Transfer, at 6,928.59. That is a difference of more than 370 pesos per transfer.
  • Cash pickup: the best option was Félix Pago, at 7,416.00 pesos; the lowest was Wells Fargo, at 7,001.38.

On the Anti-Inflation Package (PACIC), whose cap is 910 pesos for 24 products, Profeco said more than 90% of supermarket chains complied between September 28 and October 2. The cheapest basket was at Chedraui in Campeche (734.20 pesos) and the most expensive at Walmart in Culiacán (922.50). Tomatoes rose 30.25% (average 24.92 pesos per kilo), while potatoes fell 13.92%.

What you can do in Cancún

  • Compare before you fill up: the federal government keeps a map of fairly priced stations at alertas.gob.mx/estaciones.
  • Ask for a receipt and make sure the pump starts at zero before fueling.
  • If you think you were overcharged or shorted on liters, file a complaint with Profeco's consumer hotline: 55 5568 8722 or 800 468 8722, or email dudasportal@profeco.gob.mx.
  • If you receive remittances, ask your relative to compare how many pesos actually arrive, not just the fee: each company's exchange rate matters more to the total.

Profeco publishes its fuel, remittance and food basket survey every week, so these prices may change in the next report.
