Rainy season: how to prevent drain blockages and report water leaks in Cancun
Aguakan revives its healthy-drainage and leak-detection campaigns as storms intensify.
Aguakan, the utility that runs drinking water, sewerage and sanitation services in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, keeps its "Drenaje Sano" (Healthy Drainage) and "No Más Fugas" (No More Leaks) campaigns active during the rain and hurricane season, aimed at preventing drain blockages and helping customers detect leaks inside their homes.
In weeks of heavier rainfall — like the current stretch as a tropical wave crosses Quintana Roo — keeping drains clear is key to preventing street flooding and sewage overflows. Blockages are usually caused by grease, oil, wipes and trash flushed down toilets or dropped into drains.
Practical service guide:
- Do not pour grease, cooking oil, wet wipes, diapers or cigarette butts down the drain; throw them in the trash.
- Check for internal leaks: if your meter keeps spinning with all taps closed, you likely have a leak. Fixing it prevents high bills and water waste.
- Report street leaks, illegal hookups or sewage pooling to Aguakan's customer center: (998) 891-4860 in Cancun and (984) 873-0145 in Playa del Carmen.
- Check your usage and history and pay online at oficina.aguakan.com to avoid lines.
Protecting drains and fixing leaks promptly reduces flooding, protects public health and helps keep service stable during the rainiest time of year in the Mexican Caribbean.
