Anyone commuting daily between Cancún and Playa del Carmen has an alternative to the bus and car once again. The Tren Maya's commercial route between the two cities resumed on Friday, Aug. 15, with four daily trips and a journey of 46 to 52 minutes, following a launch led by Governor Mara Lezama.

Schedules. From Cancún to Playa del Carmen, departures are at 6:45 and 10:30 a.m., arriving at 7:34 and 11:19. In the other direction, from Playa del Carmen to Cancún, trains leave at 7:47 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and arrive at 8:40 and 12:53. In other words, two runs each way, concentrated in the morning and midday.

Fares. Tickets start at 74 pesos for passengers with special discounts, 99 pesos for Quintana Roo residents and 148 pesos in tourist class for domestic travelers. Tickets are sold on the official Tren Maya website and at station box offices.

Getting to the station. The relaunch adds the Tren Maya Conecta bus service, which links the stations with points around the city. In Cancún there are routes to the International Airport, Plaza Las Américas and the Hotel Zone, with stops at the Maya Museum and Plaza La Isla, so the trip doesn't end at the rail terminal.

Why it's worth checking. For workers and students making the trip every day, the train offers a predictable travel time that doesn't depend on traffic on the federal highway, one of the state's most accident-prone stretches. Before planning your day, confirm the schedule and buy in advance, especially on weekends, since for now there are only two departures each way and seats are limited. If your work hours don't match those windows, consider combining the train with the Tren Maya Conecta bus to complete your trip.
