Tren Maya restarts Cancun–Playa del Carmen route on August 15: schedules and how to book
The state government announced four daily runs between both cities and the launch of "Tren Maya Conecta," an intermodal shuttle linking stations with the airport, hotels and malls.
The Cancun–Playa del Carmen route of the Tren Maya will resume service on Saturday, August 15 with four daily runs, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced. On the same date, "Tren Maya Conecta" will begin operating as an intermodal transport service linking the train stations with key points in both cities, according to the Quintana Roo state government.
The announced schedule: from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, departures at 6:45 a.m. (arriving 7:34) and 10:30 a.m. (arriving 11:19); from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, departures at 7:47 a.m. (arriving 8:40) and 12:00 p.m. (arriving 12:53). Each trip takes roughly 50 minutes.
Per the official announcement, "Tren Maya Conecta" is designed to move workers, visitors and tourists between the stations and destinations such as the airport, shopping malls, hotels and tourist areas of Cancun and Playa del Carmen — addressing one of the project's most cited gaps: stations sit far from urban centers, and the last-mile transfer made the trip more expensive.
How to book. Tickets can be checked and purchased on the official booking portal (reservas.ventaboletostrenmaya.com.mx), at trenmaya.gob.mx, or by phone at 55 9771 1000. Check availability before planning your trip, since the announced runs are limited.
What it means for residents. For people who commute between the two cities, the 6:45 a.m. departure from Cancun and the midday return from Playa del Carmen offer an alternative to the vans and buses on federal highway 307, especially at peak times. The total cost will depend on the current fare for the segment plus the transfer to the station — exactly what the new intermodal service aims to solve. The announcement did not detail fares for the train or the Conecta service, so confirm them through official channels before August 15.
