Quintana Roo launches SEMUJERES Mobile Unit: free psychology, legal and social-work services for women in remote communities
Governor Mara Lezama unveiled a mobile module that will roll out three tiers of free care for women who cannot reach the state Women's Secretariat's fixed offices.
The Quintana Roo state government has put a Women's Secretariat (SEMUJERES) Mobile Unit on the road that will travel through the state's most remote communities to offer free comprehensive care, so users do not have to travel to the agency's fixed offices in the municipal capitals.
The official launch was led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and by the Secretary of Women, Esther Burgos Jiménez. The unit is part of the state administration's "territorial government" model, which aims to bring public services closer to rural localities.
Services offered
The Mobile Unit is equipped with three service modules:
- Psychology: emotional support for women dealing with violence, grief, anxiety or family conflict.
- Legal counsel: guidance on child support, divorce, custody, protection orders and gender-violence complaints.
- Social work: linkage to social programs, aid packages and referrals to other agencies such as DIF, health authorities or the Prosecutor's Office.
Who can use it
The service is open to all women in Quintana Roo, free of charge and with no prior enrollment. The agency will prioritize communities with less access to SEMUJERES offices, meaning rural localities and neighborhoods on the outskirts of the municipal capitals.
How to know when it will visit your area
The official announcement did not publish a specific route calendar or direct request phone numbers. Women interested in the service can:
- Follow the official social-media accounts of the Quintana Roo Women's Secretariat for upcoming stops.
- Ask at the municipal palace or local DIF offices whether a visit is confirmed.
- In a violence emergency, do not wait for the Mobile Unit: call 911 or the state Prosecutor's Line of Women, which operates 24 hours a day.
Why it matters
Several Quintana Roo communities lie more than an hour from the nearest SEMUJERES office, especially in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, Lázaro Cárdenas and the rural areas of Bacalar. That geographic isolation is one of the barriers Mexico's National Survey on Household Relationship Dynamics (ENDIREH) has documented as a driver of under-reporting of gender-based violence. A rolling unit that puts psychologists and lawyers on residents' doorstep attacks exactly that gap.
