Quintana Roo weather July 26: highs of 40°C and afternoon thunderstorms, Coeproc says
State civil-protection forecasters cite Caribbean moisture and upper-level circulation, with heat-index readings up to 42°C in Lázaro Cárdenas and locally heavy rain in the south.
Quintana Roo's State Civil Protection Coordination (Coeproc) issued a weather bulletin valid from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, July 27, forecasting a hot to very hot day with showers and locally heavy rain accompanied by lightning across the state.
According to Coeproc, the state is under the influence of moisture flowing in from the Caribbean toward the Yucatán Peninsula and a cyclonic circulation in the upper levels of the atmosphere. The agency clarified that no tropical cyclone is currently active in the Caribbean, so any rainfall is expected to be convective, not tied to a named system.
Municipal outlook
- Benito Juárez (Cancún): high 36–38°C, low 26–28°C, with a heat index of 41°C.
- Lázaro Cárdenas (Kantunilkín): the hottest area, with highs of 38–40°C and a heat index of 42°C.
- Cozumel: high 32–34°C, low 26–28°C, heat index of 40°C.
Rainfall totals of 25 to 50 millimeters are expected mainly in the south of the state (Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar and Felipe Carrillo Puerto). Winds will gust 30 to 50 km/h along the coast. At sea, waves of 2 to 4 feet are forecast, with water temperatures of 27–28°C.
What residents should do
Given the mix of extreme heat, storms and lightning, Coeproc recommends:
- Avoid direct sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when solar radiation peaks.
- Stay hydrated with plain water; older adults and children are most vulnerable to heatstroke.
- Drive with caution because of possible morning and nighttime fog banks.
- Consult local Port Captaincies before any maritime or recreational activity, especially small-boat fishing.
- Secure clotheslines and loose items on patios and rooftops before afternoon storms, when the strongest gusts tend to hit.
If heavy rain, flooding or nearby lightning strikes appear, seek shelter indoors, stay away from trees and utility poles, and avoid handling electrical appliances. Emergencies can be reported to 911 or to Coeproc's Chetumal switchboard.
