Civil Protection staff inspect a temporary shelter in Cancún

The Benito Juárez municipal government said on Oct. 17, 2026, that Cancún has 82 temporary shelters ready for the 2026 rainy and tropical cyclone season, which remains active.

According to the city, the Civil Protection Department inspected the buildings to confirm they can provide safe shelter and timely assistance. The review covered structural integrity, electrical systems, safety measures, emergency signage, available equipment and internal and external risks at each site.

What's available

According to the city, in addition to the 82 temporary shelters there are:

  • One pet-friendly shelter in Supermanzana 247, Villas Otoch.
  • 312 hotel-sector shelters in the Hotel Zone, meant for hotel guests and staff.
  • 40 self-shelters in other areas.

The announcement came from the administration of Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, with the participation of city Secretary General Antonio Riveroll Ribbon.

Context: the season isn't over

The Atlantic tropical cyclone season officially runs through Nov. 30. On Oct. 15, the state Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC), led by Guillermo Núñez Leal, met in Benito Juárez with the heads of the state's 11 municipal civil protection units. According to the state government, officials stressed that the season remains active and that the approach of winter calls for continued prevention.

What to do now

Municipal Civil Protection recommends:

  • Follow only official channels from the city and state governments.
  • Keep the front of your home clean so trash doesn't clog storm drains.
  • Remove loose objects from rooftops, which can become projectiles in strong winds.

Additional practical tips:

  • Find your nearest shelter today, before any warning is issued. You can ask the city at (998) 881 28 00.
  • If you have a dog or cat, keep in mind that only one shelter accepts pets (SM 247, Villas Otoch); plan how you would get there.
  • Pack a go-bag with IDs and documents in a waterproof bag, medicine, water, a flashlight, batteries and a charger.
  • If you live in a low-lying area or a lightly built home, agree with your family on when and how you would move to a shelter.

City Hall is located at 5 Tulum Avenue in downtown Cancún.
