Quintana Roo Among Mexico's Six States With Most Dengue: How to Protect Yourself
The state has logged more than 153 confirmed cases in the first half of 2026, according to the federal Health Ministry; Cancún is already running junk-removal and fumigation drives.
Quintana Roo ranks sixth nationally in dengue incidence, with more than 153 confirmed cases of classic dengue accumulated in the first half of 2026, according to the federal Health Ministry's Dengue Epidemiological Panorama, updated through epidemiological week 28.
Per the federal report, the municipalities with the most infections are Bacalar, Othón P. Blanco, Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) and José María Morelos, areas where seasonal rain and heat favor the reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Although most patients show mild classic dengue symptoms, roughly one third of confirmed cases have required medical attention for warning signs or severe dengue.
What authorities are doing in Cancún
In Benito Juárez, City Hall reported that this week it ran a junk-removal drive (descacharrización) in Supermanzana 105, in the Tierra Maya neighborhood, hauling away furniture, appliances, tires and rubble — the mosquito's favorite breeding grounds — while the State Health Services (SESA) applied thermal fogging (fumigation) in the area. Municipal crews also cleared an illegal dumping site in Supermanzana 225, on Centenario Avenue, removing 135 tons of rubble, junk and green waste over two days of work, with the stated goal of preventing pests and disease.
How to protect yourself at home
Health authorities recommend eliminating any container that collects water (buckets, tires, planters, vases), washing and covering water tanks and cisterns, keeping yards and rooftops clear, and letting fumigation brigades in when they visit your neighborhood.
If you develop high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes or muscle pain during the rainy season, go to your health clinic. The Health Ministry warns that you should never self-medicate with anti-inflammatories or acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), because they increase the risk of bleeding in dengue patients; pain and fever management should be prescribed by a doctor.
