Punta Esmeralda public beach will close its access for about three months starting August 31

Access to Punta Esmeralda public beach in Playa del Carmen will remain closed for roughly three months due to a full rehabilitation that begins August 31, the government of Playa del Carmen, in the municipality of Solidaridad, reported.

The work includes rebuilding the access road, adding features for pedestrians and people with disabilities, and maintaining the restrooms and other facilities at the public site. The municipality's Infrastructure and Public Works secretary, Dorys Aké Sierra, explained that a main problem is the deterioration of the road leading to the beach, worsened by constant traffic of heavy vehicles and machinery. The project represents an investment of nearly 23 million pesos and must be finished before the December high season begins.

What it means for visitors from Cancún. Punta Esmeralda is one of the most popular free public beaches on the Riviera Maya, prized for its freshwater cenote that flows into the sea. The closure comes at the end of summer, when many Cancún families visit on weekends, just over an hour away via Federal Highway 307.

What to do. If you had a visit planned, consider postponing it until the reopening expected in late November, or choose other public beaches in the area while the work lasts. Before traveling, check the closure status through the official channels of the Playa del Carmen government, since the dates may shift depending on how the work progresses.
