Before buying school supplies in Cancún: the pricey brand doesn't always win, says Profeco
Mexico's consumer regulator tested 94 school items and confirmed that cheaper products can match costly ones in quality—here's how a Cancún family can stretch its budget for the 2026-2027 school year.
Ahead of the 2026-2027 school year, Mexico's consumer protection agency (Profeco) tested 94 school supplies at its National Consumer Protection Laboratory and reached a wallet-friendly conclusion: paying more does not guarantee better quality. The tests measured durability, performance, finish and product labeling on notebooks, colored pencils, erasers, geometry sets, sharpeners and pens.
Examples from the study: a 12-pen pack from a low-cost brand wrote more than 2,000 meters and earned an Excellent rating at 51.45 pesos, versus another pack priced at 235.55 pesos. A geometry set costing 37.02 pesos matched the performance of one at 94.48 pesos, and the school scissors reviewed ranged from 14.89 to 26.90 pesos. Bottom line: comparing before buying can cut the cost of the same item several times over.
What the agency recommends to spend smarter:
- Reuse anything still in good shape from last year (backpacks, rulers, colors, geometry sets) before replacing it.
- Compare prices at formal stores and check the official SEP supply list for 2026-2027 to avoid over-buying.
- Skip last-minute purchases and, above all, don't go into debt: Profeco warns against using installment plans or costly credit to cover supplies and uniforms.
- Keep your receipts: they are your proof for any claim over a defective product.
Local value for Cancún. In Benito Juárez, where thousands of families stock up at once, choosing by brand versus quality-for-price adds up with every school-age child. Profeco will set up 54 Back-to-School Fairs nationwide, offering clothing, backpacks, shoes, supplies and discounted services—plus free services such as haircuts and medical certificates; check the official map for the nearest location in Quintana Roo. If a store ignores the displayed price, overcharges or refuses a receipt, consumers can file a complaint with Profeco through gob.mx/profeco and its online tools. Extra tip: set a budget per child before heading out and bring the SEP list to avoid impulse buys.
