De los Colegios Ave.: temporary pothole repairs now, full repaving from January 2027
The city is patching sections damaged by Aguakan's trenches and recommends detours via Calle Durango and Rinconada de las Chachalacas.
The Benito Juárez city government has begun temporary pothole repairs on De los Colegios Avenue in Cancun to ease traffic while Aguakan finishes installing new water and sewer lines along the road, the municipality said on October 5.
According to the city, trenches up to three meters deep dug for the new pipes were eroded by recent rains, damaging the pavement. The Public Services Department is patching the 2.6-kilometer stretch that runs toward Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard and up to Huayacán Avenue.
Permanent work starts in 2027
Mayor Ana Paty Peralta said the avenue will be completely repaved. The city says the project design is underway and permanent work is scheduled to begin in January 2027. It will include a 7-centimeter hydraulic base, 16 drainage (absorption) wells, sidewalks, curbs and street lighting. The municipal Public Works office, IMPLAN, Aguakan and the Traffic Department are involved in the planning.
Residents frustrated
Residents, students and workers in the area called for a protest on Tuesday morning, October 6, on Colosio Boulevard. They are demanding that the work be finished on time, safely and in an orderly way, with better signage. Protesters say at least three vehicles have fallen into sinkholes linked to the work, which began in May.
What to do if you drive through the area
- Detours: the city suggests using Calle Durango and Rinconada de las Chachalacas to reach Colosio Boulevard.
- School hours: traffic officers control access to the International American School of Cancun (IAS) and Colegio Mérida during drop-off and pick-up; leave earlier.
- Extra care in the rain: water can hide potholes or trenches. Slow down and avoid puddles of unknown depth.
- Report hazards: potholes, sinkholes or missing signs can be reported to the city's ChatCun via WhatsApp at 998 778 4500 (24/7) or at (998) 881 2800. Leaks or sewer problems go to Aguakan at (998) 891 4860.
De los Colegios is one of the busiest routes for families heading to private schools in the city's south, so the work directly affects the daily commute of thousands of people.
