PACIC grocery basket: Profeco found price gaps of up to 172 pesos between stores; how to compare in Cancún

The 24-item basket cost between 739.90 and 911.77 pesos in the September 14–18 survey; the consumer agency also reported diesel prices and the best remittance service.

Supermarket shelves stocked with basic grocery items

Filling the same basket of 24 basic goods can cost up to 172 pesos more depending on the store, according to monitoring by Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), which its head, Iván Escalante Ruiz, presented on September 28, 2026 along with a new price "heat map" by retail chain.

In the survey carried out September 14–18, the basket under the Anti-Inflation and High-Cost Package (PACIC) —whose agreed reference price is 910 pesos— ranged from 739.90 pesos at a Mega Soriana store in Acapulco, Guerrero, to 911.77 pesos at a Ley store in Durango. According to Profeco, in the cities reviewed in this report (Tultitlán, Puebla and Guadalajara) the highest prices stayed within the limit.

What the heat map is

It is a monthly comparison of each of the 24 products' average price by retail chain, color-coded green for the lowest prices, yellow for mid-range and red for the highest. As an example, Profeco reported cooking oil ranging from 28.82 to 35.52 pesos.

Diesel and remittances

In the same report, the agency said diesel averaged 27.00 pesos per liter nationwide on September 25, ranging from 26.89 to 28.74 pesos, and that it placed warning seals at two gas stations in Puebla over prices it deemed unjustified.

On money transfers from the United States, the "Quién es Quién en los Precios" program found that for 13 consecutive months Finabien offered the best exchange rate: 7,142.21 pesos for a 400-dollar transfer, versus 6,771.39 pesos from Ria Money Transfer, the lowest payer. That is a gap of more than 370 pesos on a single transfer.

How to use this in Cancún

This week's report did not include stores in Quintana Roo, but the tools help you compare before you buy:

  • Check Profeco's "Quién es Quién en los Precios" program for prices by product and store in your city.
  • Look for PACIC signage on supermarket shelves to find the basket items.
  • Diesel and gasoline: check station-by-station prices at alertas.gob.mx/estaciones/ before filling up.
  • If you receive remittances, compare how many pesos each service pays per dollar; small exchange-rate differences add up every month.
  • If a store or gas station overcharges you or doesn't honor a posted price, report it to Profeco; filing is free.
