MOBI transit system bus on a Cancún avenue

Route 17 Leona Vicario, the first urban route of Quintana Roo's MOBI public transit system in Cancún, will begin service on Monday, October 19, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced. Rides will be free from October 19 through 26.

Route and coverage

According to the state government, the route is 44.05 km long and runs from Isla Hawái street, near Arco Norte avenue, to Plaza Las Américas, mainly along Lak'in, Leona Vicario and Tulum avenues.

It crosses 99 neighborhoods and serves destinations including the University of Quintana Roo Cancún campus, COBACH Plantel 4 high school, Mercado Lak'in 259, Multiplaza Kabah and the ADO bus terminal. Officials estimate it will benefit about 242,000 people.

How often it runs

  • Peak hours: a bus every 7.5 minutes.
  • Off-peak: a bus every 16 minutes.

Fares (starting Oct. 27)

MOBI allows up to three boardings within three hours of the first ride, as long as you pay with the same electronic card:

General $15 $7.50 Free $22.50
Social (students, seniors) $10 $5 Free $15

Connections

Per the state announcement, Route 17 connects with Route 27 Kilómetro 0 (Lak'in avenue, Glorieta del Ceviche and Plaza Las Américas), Villas del Mar 3 (Kabah and Leona Vicario avenues) and La Rehoyada (Glorieta del Ceviche and López Portillo/Tulum avenues). Those routes, plus Route 27 Puente Nichupté, will join MOBI before year-end. It also connects with vans 4 x 7, 6, 9, 17, 23, 69, 87 and 102.

What riders should do

  1. Get a MOBI card before October 27, when free rides end. Cards are sold and topped up at OXXO, Dunosusa, 7-Eleven and GoMart; SIX and Súper Willys stores offer top-ups only — 247 locations in total.
  2. Students, seniors and people with permanent disabilities can apply for the social or zero fare at the permanent modules of the transit institute's Benito Juárez office and at IMDAI, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Temporary modules are announced on official social media.
  3. Always use the same card; otherwise the system won't recognize your transfer and you'll pay full fare.
  4. Use the free week to try the route and time your commute.

For residents who currently need two or three buses to cross the city, the transfer scheme could mean savings: a trip with two connections will cost $22.50 at the general fare within a three-hour window.
