New Car Sales Set First-Half Record in 2026: 754,000 Units, INEGI Reports

Sales of new light vehicles in Mexico reached 754,394 units in the first half of 2026, a record for a January–June period, with annual growth of 5.3%, according to INEGI's Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL).

In June alone, 126,778 units were sold, 7.6% more than the 117,780 of the same month in 2025. It was the best June since 2017, when 127,752 cars were sold. The Mexican Association of Automotive Dealers (AMDA) expects the streak to continue through the rest of the year, driven by the growth of auto financing. The arrival of new brands in the Mexican market — many of Asian origin — has also fueled the momentum by widening the range of models and the dealership network across the country.

How this figure is measured. The RAIAVL is an administrative registry that INEGI publishes monthly with information reported directly by companies in the sector: retail sales, production and exports of new vehicles. It does not include used cars or monetary amounts, making it the official gauge of the auto market's volume.

What it means for Cancun. In a city growing as fast as Cancun, where much of the daily commute depends on private cars while public transportation is still being overhauled, an auto market with more brands and more credit means greater variety and more price competition for anyone planning to buy a new vehicle — though also more pressure on urban mobility.

Practical guide if you plan to buy on credit. Most new cars in Mexico are sold through some form of financing, so compare before signing: check each offer's CAT (Total Annual Cost), not just the monthly payment; factor in the cost of mandatory insurance, usually bundled into dealership loans; and use Condusef's free auto loan simulators to compare banks and brand financing arms. A larger down payment reduces total interest, and plans longer than 60 months lower the monthly payment but raise the final cost of the vehicle.
