Mexico's 2026 minimum wage vs. the UMA: why they differ and which one sets your fines and credits
The general minimum wage is 315.04 pesos a day while the UMA is 117.31; which unit applies can significantly change what you pay in fines, Infonavit credits and fees in Cancun.
Mexico's general minimum wage stands at 315.04 pesos per day since January 1, 2026, according to the National Minimum Wage Commission (CONASAMI), while the Unit of Measure and Update (UMA) is worth 117.31 pesos per day since February 1, as set by the national statistics institute INEGI. That means the minimum wage is now worth almost 2.7 times the UMA, even though both indicators started from the same amount back in 2016.
The gap matters for your wallet because each unit is used for different things. The minimum wage is the legal floor for a day's work: in Quintana Roo —part of the country's general zone— no formal full-time job may pay less than 315.04 pesos a day. The UMA, on the other hand, is the unit the law uses to calculate fines, government fees, IMSS contribution caps, bonds and credits, including Infonavit housing loans denominated in units.
According to CONASAMI, the 2026 raise combined an Independent Recovery Amount (MIR) of 17.01 pesos plus a 6.5 percent increase for the general zone, and a 5 percent raise for the Northern Border Free Zone, where the minimum reached 440.87 pesos per day. The UMA rose only with inflation: INEGI updated it using the annual change of the National Consumer Price Index through December 2025, which was 3.69 percent. Its current values are 117.31 pesos daily, 3,566.22 monthly and 42,794.64 per year.
Why did they split? A 2016 constitutional reform "de-indexed" the minimum wage: before that, raising it automatically made fines and wage-indexed credits more expensive, which discouraged increases. With the UMA in place, the minimum wage could grow above inflation without dragging those charges up. That is why a fine or credit calculated in UMA is now far cheaper than one calculated in minimum wages.
What to check if you live in Cancun: if you hold an older Infonavit loan denominated in "times the minimum wage," check your Mi Cuenta Infonavit account to see whether it was converted to the peso or UMA scheme, since that changes how fast your debt grows each year. For traffic fines, licenses and municipal or state fees, the peso amount depends on how many UMA the regulation sets: with the 2026 UMA, each unit equals 117.31 pesos. And at work, employers must pay at least CONASAMI's minimum wage — using the UMA as a wage base is illegal.
