New-car sales rise 8% in September to 129,288 units, INEGI says
More than 1.14 million light vehicles have been sold so far in 2026, up 5% from last year.
Mexico sold 129,288 new light vehicles in September 2026, 8.0% more than in the same month of 2025, according to the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry published by INEGI, the national statistics agency, on October 2.
Compared with August, when 129,479 units were sold, the figure was essentially flat (down about 0.1%).
Year to date
From January through September, 1,144,002 light vehicles were sold, versus 1,089,151 in the same period of 2025, an increase of roughly 5%, according to INEGI data also released by the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).
INEGI's registry covers compacts, subcompacts, luxury and sports cars, SUVs and light pickups sold by brands that report to the agency.
Why it matters
New-car sales are a gauge of spending on durable goods: most are bought on credit, so their growth reflects both household confidence and access to financing.
If you're buying a car in Cancún
- Compare the loan, not just the monthly payment: check the CAT (total annual cost) and the total amount payable using Condusef's auto-loan simulator. A longer term lowers the payment but raises the total price.
- Get the quote in writing: Profeco, the consumer protection agency, recommends keeping quotes, contracts and receipts; if a dealer fails to honor the deal, you can file a complaint.
- Add up fixed costs: insurance, plates, registration and maintenance. In a city exposed to heavy rain and hurricanes like Cancún, make sure your policy covers weather-related damage.
- If buying used, check the national vehicle registry (REPUVE) for theft reports before paying.
INEGI publishes the report monthly in its press room; October's figures are due in early November.
