Illegal dump in Cancún's SM 230 shut down after resident's ChatCun report
The city hauled 2.5 tons of waste from an abandoned lot; here's how to report a dump site in your neighborhood.
An abandoned lot in Cancún's supermanzana (district) 230 that had turned into a dumping ground was cleaned up and closed on Friday, October 9, by the Benito Juárez city government. According to the municipality, crews removed 2.5 tons of waste and posted a «No Dumping» banner to keep the site from being used again.
It started with a resident's report
The cleanup was triggered by a neighbor, Carolina Nolasco Méndez, who flagged the lot through ChatCun, the city's resident service platform. Mayor Ana Paty Peralta visited the site and said the Public Services department was removing all the trash that had piled up there.
According to the official report, a 15-person cleanup brigade and an 11-member landscaping crew took part, along with four operators running a backhoe, a dump truck and a 3.5-ton pickup. The city said the cleanup benefits 12 nearby homes.
Why it matters
Dump sites on vacant lots are more than an eyesore: tires and containers collect rainwater where dengue-carrying mosquitoes breed, they attract pests, and they can catch fire in hot weather. In a city with no surface rivers like Cancún, trash can also wash into storm wells and cenotes that connect to the aquifer.
How to report an illegal dump
If there's a lot in your neighborhood where people dump trash or rubble:
- Report it on ChatCun via WhatsApp at 998 778 4500, the channel the city asks residents to use.
- Include the exact location (supermanzana, block, street or landmark) and photos.
- If you see someone dumping, note the time and, if possible, a description or license plate, without confronting anyone.
- You can also call City Hall at (998) 881 2800.
Avoid creating new dumps
- Put your trash out only during your area's collection schedule.
- Furniture, mattresses and rubble don't go in the daily trash; ask on ChatCun how to dispose of them.
- If you hire someone to haul away debris, make sure they take it to an authorized site; the vacant lot on the corner is not one.
