Free school sneakers in Cancún: over 75,000 pairs delivered, 64% of target

The city's «Steps for Transformation» program aims to reach 117,048 pairs in 427 public schools in Benito Juárez.

School sneakers handed out to students at a Cancún middle school

The Benito Juárez city government has delivered more than 75,000 pairs of school sneakers at over 320 public schools in Cancún, a little more than 64% of the target of 117,048 pairs, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta said during a handout on October 10 at Middle School No. 6 «Belisario Domínguez», afternoon shift.

At that school, 226 pairs were handed out. The program, called «Steps for Transformation», covers a total of 427 public schools across special education, preschool, elementary, middle school and distance-learning middle school (telesecundaria).

«We have delivered more than 75,000 pairs of sneakers in more than 320 schools, which represents progress of more than 64 percent of the established goal», the mayor said.

What's left and who qualifies

Based on official figures, roughly 42,000 pairs remain to be delivered at around a hundred schools. The support is distributed directly at schools, so families do not need to apply individually: the sneakers arrive through the public school where the student is enrolled.

What to do if your child hasn't received them

  • Ask the school principal's office whether the school is scheduled and when the delivery will arrive; schools are the link with the city.
  • Confirm the school is public and at the basic-education or special-education level covered by the program.
  • If your child was absent on delivery day, ask the principal or parents' association how pending pairs for the group are handed out.
  • For general questions about the program, call the city switchboard at (998) 881 28 00.

Why it matters in Cancún

School shoes are one of the heaviest back-to-school expenses, and one that repeats during the year because children grow and daily use wears sneakers out. The city presents the program as support for household budgets and for keeping kids in school. For a family with two or three children in elementary and middle school, getting the shoes free is a direct saving in the middle of the semester.

The reported progress means deliveries will continue in the coming weeks, so it is worth watching for notices from your child's school.
