Free spay and neuter for dogs and cats in Cancún: how to use the IMPA clinics
The city's animal welfare institute sterilized 150 pets at its latest clinic; here's where to find out about the next ones.
Benito Juárez's Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare (IMPA) spayed and neutered 150 dogs and cats free of charge at a clinic held on Saturday, September 26, at Secundaria Técnica No. 39 "Ikal" in Cancún, the city government reported.
According to the administration of Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, the clinic began at 9:00 a.m. and was staffed by eight veterinary surgeons. These campaigns rotate through different neighborhoods of the city.
How to find the next clinic
The city says dates and locations for upcoming campaigns are announced on the official municipal social media accounts (@AytoCancun) on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
You can also contact IMPA directly:
- Phone: 998 892 3326
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Location: Supermanzana 99, lote 01
The announcement does not list registration requirements, so it's a good idea to call ahead to confirm whether an appointment is needed, drop-off times and pre-surgery instructions.
Why spay and neuter
Sterilization is the main tool for reducing the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats, a visible issue in many Cancún neighborhoods. The surgery can be a significant expense at a private clinic for many families, which makes the free city clinics an accessible option.
Practical tips if you bring your pet
- Ask IMPA for pre-surgery instructions, such as recommended fasting hours.
- Bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier to prevent escapes.
- Plan the trip home: pets need rest and supervision for the following days.
- Follow the post-operative care instructions the vets give you.
If you missed this clinic, keep an eye on the city's posts for upcoming dates.
