Free dog and cat spay/neuter in Cancún: October dates and requirements
After operating on 150 pets in Tierra Maya, the city announced three more clinics on October 17, 24 and 31 in different neighborhoods.
The Benito Juárez city government will hold three more free spay-and-neuter clinics for dogs and cats on Saturdays October 17, 24 and 31 in different parts of Cancún, after 150 animals were treated on October 10 in the Tierra Maya subdivision (Supermanzana 105), according to the municipality.
The campaign, called «Zero Animal Overpopulation at the Root», is run by the Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare and was led by Mayor Ana Paty Peralta. Saturday's clinic was held at the Ángela Peralta de Castera elementary school.

Requirements
According to the city, the service is an outpatient surgery under anesthesia and is free of charge. For the Tierra Maya clinic, owners received a pre-registration card with an assigned time slot (9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.). The stated conditions are:
- The dog or cat must be at least 4 months old.
- The animal must have fasted for 8 hours.
- The owner is responsible for stimulating and watching the pet during recovery.
To check whether pre-registration is open in your neighborhood, as well as capacity and times, the city listed the phone number (998) 881 28 00.
Tips before you go
Since slots are handed out in advance with set times, it makes sense to call or visit the site a few days ahead to ask how to get a card. On surgery day, bring your dog on a leash and your cat in a carrier or closed box; this prevents escapes and helps the animal recover from anesthesia. A blanket or towel helps keep the pet warm as it wakes up.
At home, during the first days make sure the pet does not lick or bite the incision and rests in a clean place. If you notice bleeding, swelling or that it has not eaten after a day, see a veterinarian.
Why it matters in Cancún
Sterilization is the tool the city itself proposes to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats, a problem that is especially visible in newer neighborhoods. A single unplanned litter can end in abandonment, which is why the clinics are brought directly into neighborhoods so cost and distance are not a barrier.
If your neighborhood is not on the October schedule, ask at the same number about upcoming dates: the city has been rotating locations among different supermanzanas.
