"A Summer Day in Your Neighborhood": DIF Brings Free Kids' Activities to 13 Cancun Locations
The program tours neighborhoods like Catalania, Real Valencia, La Joya and Villas Otoch Paraíso through July and August, with sessions on bullying, abuse and addiction prevention.
During the July and August school break, DIF Benito Juárez will bring its "Un Día de Verano en tu Colonia" (A Summer Day in Your Neighborhood) program to 13 locations across Cancun, offering free recreational, sports and educational activities for children and teenagers, the agency reported through its Psychosocial Risk Prevention Department, headed by Marisol Sendo Rodríguez.
This is the program's fourth consecutive edition. It aims to provide safe spaces during the school recess while addressing prevention topics: child labor, sexual abuse, human trafficking, school bullying, teen pregnancy and substance abuse, along with promoting children's rights and socioemotional skills.
Where and when
The calendar kicks off this Wednesday, July 22, in the Catalania neighborhood (with a second date on Friday the 24th), continues in Real Valencia on July 27, 29 and 31, and in La Joya on Tuesday the 28th. In August, the program will visit Kusamil, Prado Norte, Villas Otoch Paraíso, Paraíso Maya, Cielo Nuevo, UrbiVillas, Paseos del Mar and the Mexico and Chiapaneca neighborhoods, on dates DIF publishes through its official social media.
What the activities include
Sessions include "Breaking the Silence," which helps children identify types of school bullying; "Aim for Protection," focused on preventing child sexual abuse; and games such as the Safety Traffic Light, Values in Balance and the Treasure of Emotions, designed so kids learn while playing.
Why it's worth showing up
In Cancun, much of the summer-course offering is private and paid, leaving many families in working-class neighborhoods out; bringing the program directly to the barrios also removes transportation costs and travel time. Activities take place in each neighborhood's public spaces and require no prior registration, though minors must attend with a responsible adult. Interested families can confirm venues and schedules through DIF Benito Juárez's official social media or offices — and use the visit to ask about the agency's other free services, such as psychological care and family legal counseling.
