Chetumal launches the Payo Obispo bus route: every 19 minutes, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., cash only

The IMOVEQROO pilot route serves 45 neighborhoods and the airport and will later join the MOBI system.

Public transit bus in Chetumal

Quintana Roo's Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) launched the Payo Obispo public transit route in Chetumal starting Monday, October 5. It runs daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with buses roughly every 19 minutes, the state government said.

Route

According to IMOVEQROO, headed by Rafael Hernández Kotasek, the route starts on Javier Rojo Gómez Avenue, heads north to Tapir Street, returns south and connects with Antonio Plaza and Revolución, Álvaro Obregón and Miguel Hidalgo avenues.

Stops along the way include elementary schools, Universidad Aztlán, Parque de los Caimanes, Plaza Las Américas, Chetumal International Airport and City Hall.

Who benefits

The institute says the route covers 45 neighborhoods, 47 schools and 10,094 homes, serving an estimated 26,233 people and 1,431 businesses.

Fares

Because it is a pilot route, fares are cash only. IMOVEQROO said it will later join the Quintana Roo Welfare Mobility System (MOBI), which plans 10 routes and a projected fleet of 66 electric buses for Chetumal.

Tips for riders

  • Carry exact change or coins, since card payment is not available during the pilot.
  • If you're heading to or from the airport, keep the 19-minute frequency and the 10 p.m. last service in mind for late flights.
  • Plan an alternative if you need to travel after 10 p.m.

What about Cancun?

For Cancun residents, this is the same MOBI model already operating in Benito Juárez: the city recently highlighted that MOBI Route 27, serving Villas Otoch Paraíso, saves riders up to 50 minutes per trip. The Chetumal launch shows the system continuing to expand to other cities in the state.
