CFE voltage swings disrupt water service across Cancún neighborhoods: what to do and where to report
Aguakan warned that power failures at its wells and pumping stations may leave parts of Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres with low pressure or no water; recovery will be gradual.
Several Cancún superblocks, along with areas of Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, may experience low pressure or no drinking water due to voltage variations on the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) grid, water utility Aguakan reported in a notice issued July 16.
According to the concession holder, power interruptions hit the operation of wells and pumping stations in its water-capture zones, which depend entirely on electricity to run. The company noted the situation is outside its control and said it remains in constant contact with CFE so electrical service is fully restored and water supply recovers gradually.
Why water takes longer to return than power
When a well or booster station loses power, the network loses pressure; once restarted, the system must refill pipes and tanks before water reaches upper floors and areas farthest from the wells with normal force. That is why recovery is neither immediate nor even: some superblocks normalize within hours while others take longer.
What to do while service comes back
- Use water sparingly through the day: postpone car washing, irrigation and pool filling.
- If you have a rooftop tank or cistern, check its level and save it for essentials.
- Report outages or low pressure to 073 (Aguakan's service line) or (998) 891-4860 for Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres.
- You can also check official utility notices on Facebook and X (DHCAGUAKAN).
- If you spot a leak on a public street, report it: restoring pressure with active leaks takes longer.
The notice adds to a demanding season for local water infrastructure: on July 15 Aguakan reactivated its "Healthy Drainage" campaign for the 2026 rainy and hurricane season, and CFE's grid in northern Quintana Roo has seen voltage swings during July's heat waves and storms.
