Nazareth Avenue 60% done: 1.8 km being rebuilt between Colosio and Huayacán

Work includes new asphalt, signage and drainage wells; Colegios Avenue will follow in 2027 once Aguakan finishes its work there.

Repaving work on Nazareth Avenue in Cancún

The rebuilding of Nazareth Avenue in Cancún is about 60% complete, the Benito Juárez city government reported on October 14. The project covers 1.8 kilometers between Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard and Huayacán Avenue and will benefit some 27,344 people, according to the city.

«This avenue is very important because it connects Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard with Huayacán Avenue; we are doing a total reconstruction,» Mayor Ana Paty Peralta said during an inspection tour.

What the work includes

According to City Hall, the project includes:

  • Rebuilding the road base and laying a 7-centimeter asphalt surface.
  • 14,590.86 square meters of asphalt concrete.
  • 3,724.23 linear meters of road markings and 31 traffic signs.
  • 8 absorption wells to drain rainwater.
  • Curbs and sidewalks, built in collaboration with residents.

The city did not disclose the investment amount or an estimated completion date.

Colegios Avenue in 2027

Peralta said the next commitment is Colegios Avenue, to be repaved in 2027 once Aguakan, the water utility, finishes pending work there. Doing water and sewer work before paving avoids tearing up new asphalt shortly after it is laid, a common problem in fast-growing cities.

If you drive through the area

Nazareth is one of the routes linking the Huayacán area with Colosio Boulevard, the main road to the airport and the Hotel Zone. While work continues:

  • Allow extra time at rush hour and consider alternate routes.
  • Follow temporary signs and partial closures; machinery and crews are working on the roadway.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists: use designated crossings and avoid walking on freshly laid asphalt.
  • Report potholes, unmarked detours or flooding through the city's citizen-service channels.

The absorption wells matter in a city where heavy rain often causes street flooding; they capture stormwater and channel it underground, which should reduce flooding on this stretch once the project is finished.
