Cancún impounds more than 1,200 motorcycles in road-safety operations so far this year
The 'Lives in Motion' program has run 81 operations to cut crashes; here's how to ride within the rules.
The Benito Juárez Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) reported that it impounded 1,206 motorcycles under the "Lives in Motion" program after carrying out 81 operations between January and August 15, 2026, at various points around Cancún.
According to the department, led by Jaime Padilla Barrientos, the seizures stemmed from missing documentation, lack of license plates, failure to wear personal protective equipment and other traffic and road-safety violations. During the operations, officers also identified and recovered motorcycles reported stolen, which were turned over to the State Attorney General's Office.
The secretariat said the goal is to "strengthen road safety, prevent accidents and promote responsible mobility," and urged riders to drive responsibly, wear proper protective gear, respect passenger limits and heed traffic signs.
In a city where motorcycles are a daily means of transport for thousands of families, an impoundment means paperwork, tow-yard fees and costs that can be avoided by riding within the rules.
How to avoid losing your bike: always wear a certified helmet —you and your passenger— keep plates valid and visible, and carry your driver's license, registration card and proof of insurance. Don't carry more passengers than allowed and stay out of restricted areas. If you buy a used motorcycle, verify it has no theft report before paying, so you aren't tied to a unit that could be handed over to prosecutors.
