The corridor's widening is about 37% complete and is expected to wrap up in December, according to the federal authority.

Widening works on the Cancun–Isla Blanca highway

The modernization of the Cancun–Isla Blanca highway is advancing and, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), the project is roughly 37% complete, with completion expected in December of this year. The plan calls for widening 25 kilometers of road from two to four lanes.

Official figures show that about 380.9 million pesos are being invested in the sections currently under construction, with an estimated creation of more than 14,000 jobs. Work began in March 2026 and, according to the schedule reported by the federal agency, should be finished before year's end. Progress has been inspected on site by Governor Mara Lezama, who confirmed the project's advance on earlier tours.

Why it matters for Cancun. The Cancun–Isla Blanca road is the main route to the northern part of the municipality, providing access to beaches, developments and growth areas that in recent years have drawn more local and tourist traffic. By doubling the lanes, the widening aims to ease bottlenecks and cut travel times on a corridor that today gets congested during high season and on weekends.

What to expect during construction. As on any active work site, drivers should expect lane reductions, temporary detours and machinery operating along the 25 kilometers. Motorists are advised to slow down near work zones, follow the signage and respect road crews, and allow extra travel time, especially at peak hours. Those heading to the area's beaches should check the road's status before leaving and consider alternate routes when there are partial closures.
