Cancún: where to get free medical care at the Municipal Medical Units

The Benito Juárez city government reports more than 38,000 free visits at its three units, which offer everything from general check-ups to no-cost screening tests.

Cancún residents can get medical consultations and basic tests at no cost at the three Municipal Medical Units run by the Benito Juárez city government, which has provided more than 38,000 free visits so far this administration, the city reported.

Most of the care is concentrated at Municipal Medical Unit No. 1, with 32,215 services provided; followed by No. 2, with 5,654, and No. 3, which opened on July 8 and already reports 510 visits. Beyond the numbers, the useful information for residents is what they offer, where they are and when.

Available services. The units provide general consultations, preventive medicine, optometry, nutrition, psychology, dentistry and social work. They also perform rapid tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C, Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) measurement, blood glucose, blood pressure, weight, height and body mass index readings. These early-detection tests usually carry a fee at private labs, so they represent direct savings for families.

Where and when.

  • Municipal Medical Unit No. 1: next to City Hall, in Supermanzana 5. Open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Municipal Medical Unit No. 2: inside the COBUS community center, in Supermanzana 101. Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Municipal Medical Unit No. 3: in the Alfredo V. Bonfil precinct, Supermanzana 308, Leona Vicario street. Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Practical tip. Bring an official ID and arrive early, since general consultations are usually first-come, first-served. For fasting tests such as blood glucose, it is best to come early in the morning. These municipal services do not replace emergency care: in a medical emergency, call 911.

The program is part of the city's primary-care health policy, focused on prevention and bringing services to neighborhoods where access to private medical care is limited.
