Cancún airport handled 151,000 fewer passengers in September, an 8.6% drop, ASUR says
International traffic fell 11.8% and domestic 4.8%; year to date, the terminal is down 1.3 million travelers from 2025.
Cancún International Airport handled 1,607,088 passengers in September 2026, or 151,631 fewer than in the same month of 2025, an 8.6% decline, according to the monthly traffic report from airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR).
Where the drop came from
ASUR's figures show the decline was concentrated in the international market, which fell from 962,546 to 848,775 passengers (-11.8%). Domestic traffic also slipped, from 796,173 to 758,313 travelers (-4.8%).
From January through September, Cancún logged 20,882,658 passengers, versus 22,196,857 in the same period of 2025: 1,314,199 fewer (-5.9%).
In its investor release, ASUR said traffic at its Mexican airports fell 6.1% in September, while its operations in Colombia (+5.7%), Puerto Rico (+3.1%) and Ecuador (+1.7%) grew. The company's report does not explain the reasons for Cancún's decline.
Context
September is historically one of the slowest tourism months in the Mexican Caribbean because of hurricane season and the back-to-school period in the U.S. and Mexico. But because the comparison is year over year, seasonality alone does not explain the drop. Throughout 2026, ASUR's reports have shown declines at Cancún in several months, weighted toward foreign visitors.
What it means for Cancún residents
The airport is the main gateway for the tourism that sustains much of local employment in hotels, restaurants, transportation and retail. Fewer international passengers typically means lower occupancy and tips, especially in the low season.
For local travelers, softer demand may bring more competitive fares. If you plan to fly in the coming weeks:
- Compare prices across airlines and dates; Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to see lower demand.
- Check your flight status directly with your airline before leaving, especially on rainy days.
- If your flight is canceled or delayed, Mexico's consumer agency Profeco takes complaints against airlines at 55 5568 8722 or 800 468 8722.
ASUR publishes each airport's passenger traffic early every month; October figures are due in early November.
