Cancún airport traffic fell 8.6% in September, ASUR reports
The terminal handled 1.61 million travelers; international traffic dropped 11.8% and domestic 4.8%.
Cancún International Airport handled 1,607,088 passengers in September 2026, 8.6% fewer than the 1,758,719 in the same month of 2025, according to the monthly traffic report released October 7 by airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR). That works out to roughly 151,000 fewer travelers.
International traffic saw the steepest drop
According to ASUR, international traffic fell the most, from 962,546 to 848,775 passengers, an 11.8% decline. Domestic traffic slipped from 796,173 to 758,313 travelers, down 4.8%.
From January through September, Cancún has handled 20,882,658 passengers, 5.9% below the same period of 2025, the operator said.
Not an isolated month
September's numbers extend a downward trend. In its August report, ASUR said Cancún handled 1,192,427 passengers that month, 15.0% fewer than a year earlier. September is typically one of the slowest months in the Mexican Caribbean, coinciding with peak hurricane season and back-to-school, but because the comparison is year over year, seasonality alone does not explain the gap.
Across its nine airports in Mexico, ASUR reported a 6.1% decline in September. Group-wide traffic was essentially flat at about 8.6 million passengers, thanks to growth in Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Ecuador; September was the first full month in which the company counted the airports it acquired in South America, Costa Rica and Curaçao. The report does not detail the reasons for Cancún's decline.
What it means for Cancún
The airport is the main tourism gateway to northern Quintana Roo, and its traffic is a leading indicator for hotel occupancy, demand for transportation, tours and restaurants, and jobs in those industries. For residents, fewer international arrivals can mean fewer tips and working hours across the tourism sector.
For local travelers, the figures are also a useful heads-up: airlines often trim frequencies during slower periods, so it's wise to confirm your flight status directly with the airline before heading to the airport.
ASUR publishes traffic figures monthly, usually in the first week; the next report, with October data, will show whether the trend holds as the winter high season begins.
