BBVA Mexico posts lower first-half earnings on higher credit provisions
The bank reported 49.48 billion pesos in profit for the first half of 2026, down 14% from a year earlier, citing increased reserves against credit risk.
BBVA Mexico reported a profit of 49.48 billion pesos for the first half of 2026, a 14% decline compared with the same period of 2025. The bank said the drop stems from a significant increase in provisions set aside to cover potential loan losses.
In its report, the institution attributed the adjustment to slower economic activity and elevated interest rates, conditions that typically raise loan delinquency. It added that it still holds a "solid position" in capitalization, liquidity and asset quality.
A credit-risk provision is an amount banks set aside in advance in case some borrowers stop paying. Provisioning more does not mean losses have already occurred, but it does lower reported quarterly earnings. Mexico's National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) supervises these indicators as part of the financial system's soundness.
For customers in Cancun, the report does not signal a risk to their deposits. Bank accounts held at institutions authorized in Mexico are protected by the Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB) for up to 400,000 UDIS per person per bank, under the Ley de Proteccion al Ahorro Bancario.
Holders of mortgage, auto or payroll loans at any bank can use the comparison tool from the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) to review products and avoid late-payment charges. If payment becomes difficult, the standard advice is to contact the bank before falling behind, in order to negotiate restructurings or agreements that limit damage to the credit bureau record.
