Foreign investors pulled $763.7 million from Mexican stocks in June, Bank of Mexico data show

Despite the monthly outflow, the first half of 2026 still posted net inflows of $604.2 million — the strongest start to a year since 2020.

Foreign investors withdrew 763.7 million dollars from the Mexican stock market in June 2026, according to Bank of Mexico (Banxico) data on securities held by residents abroad.

With that move, non-residents' holdings of Mexican equities stood at 193.6 billion dollars, down 2.9% from the previous month and 22.4% lower than in June 2025, the central bank's figures show.

June's setback does not erase the year's positive balance: net foreign inflows into the equity market totaled 604.2 million dollars in the first half of 2026, the best first-half result since 2020, according to Banxico's records. The benchmark IPC stock index fell 2.4% in June but still holds a 4.1% gain for the year.

Financial-sector analysts attribute the June outflow to a tighter global environment: strong U.S. labor-market data lowered expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts, strengthening the dollar and drawing capital out of emerging markets, including Mexico. Uncertainty over the USMCA trade-deal review added to the pressure.

What it means for your money in Cancún

These are portfolio flows — money moving in and out of the stock exchange — not foreign direct investment in hotels, malls or real-estate projects, so they do not by themselves reflect local economic activity. Their most visible effect for residents is on the exchange rate: when capital leaves, the peso tends to weaken, making dollar purchases and trips abroad more expensive, though it can benefit people who receive remittances or earn in dollars, a common situation in Quintana Roo's tourism economy.

Anyone who wants to track the official exchange rate can check the FIX rate that the Bank of Mexico publishes free of charge every business day on its website (banxico.org.mx), the reference rate used for dollar transactions in Mexico.
