Afore Coppel and Invercap begin merger process, CONSAR confirms: what happens to your account

The deal still needs approvals; in the meantime, nothing changes for savers. How to check your Afore from Cancún.

Retirement fund managers Afore Coppel and Afore Invercap have started the process to merge, Julio César Cervantes Parra, head of Mexico's National Retirement Savings System Commission (CONSAR), confirmed on Thursday, October 8, after opening the 2026 Afore Fair in Mexico City. He noted that mergers of this kind must first be reviewed by the antitrust authority.

Where the process stands

According to CONSAR, the fund managers must submit the required information to the regulator, which expects to receive it during October, before the file goes to its Governing Board. Until there is formal approval, the merger has no effect.

Coppel's purchase of Invercap was announced in August for 4.62 billion pesos. If completed, the combined fund manager would hold nearly 14 million accounts and roughly 1 trillion pesos in managed savings, placing it among the largest in the system.

What happens to my money if I'm with either one?

  • For now, nothing. Your contributions keep going to your current Afore, and your savings remain yours: retirement savings belong to the worker, regardless of which fund manager handles them.
  • You don't need to file anything or pay anyone to "protect" your account. CONSAR warned against using brokers or middlemen who charge to speed up paperwork or promise guaranteed pensions.
  • If you ever want to switch Afores, you can do it yourself; compare fees and returns first using the information CONSAR publishes.

How to check your Afore from Cancún

The Afore Fair runs October 8–12 on the esplanade of the Iztacalco borough in Mexico City, but most of the services offered there, such as locating your account, requesting a statement, updating your information or consolidating accounts, can also be handled remotely or at your fund manager's branch. Have on hand:

  • Official photo ID.
  • Social Security Number (NSS) and CURP.
  • Proof of address.

If you don't know which Afore holds your account, call SARTEL, CONSAR's hotline: 55 1328 5000.

For app-based workers

The same day, CONSAR signed an agreement with Uber, the first mobility platform to do so, to share information about Afore accounts and voluntary savings through workshops, talks and digital materials. It also formalized partnerships with DiDi and Stori aimed at independent workers, women and people who work on digital platforms. For people in Cancún who work as app-based drivers or delivery couriers, voluntary Afore contributions are one of the few ways to build a retirement fund when you aren't enrolled as a salaried employee.
