Abuelotón 2026: Cancún's DIF Collects Support for Seniors Through August 28
The municipal drive accepts adult diapers, food, hygiene products, clothing and medicine; drop-off points have been open since June 1.
The Benito Juárez DIF (Family Development System) launched the 2026 edition of Abuelotón, an annual drive that collects supplies for senior citizens under municipal social care. The call runs through August 28 and will close with an event at Plaza de la Reforma at City Hall.
Drop-off points have been open since June 1, according to the DIF itself, and accept adult diapers, non-perishable food, personal hygiene items, gently used clothing, non-expired medicine and mobility support gear such as walkers, wheelchairs and canes.
To get the addresses and hours of the collection centers, the agency set up a WhatsApp hotline: 998 322 63 50. The launch event was attended by the acting head of the Municipal Presidency, Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja, together with staff from the local DIF system.
Why the campaign lands before Grandparents' Day. In Mexico, Grandparents' Day is celebrated on August 28, the same date on which DIF Benito Juárez concentrates its closing event. The drive focuses on supplies that public assistance cannot always sustain with ordinary budget, such as adult diapers—a recurring and heavy expense for families caring for seniors with limited mobility or chronic conditions.
How residents can contribute. Individuals or businesses can drop donations at the enabled points; some companies also contribute institutional funds or set up their own collection sites. For those who cannot drop off in person, DIF usually organizes neighborhood pickups during the final two weeks of the campaign.
Ongoing services for seniors in Cancún. Beyond Abuelotón, seniors in Benito Juárez have year-round access to the INAPAM card, which grants discounts on transportation, medicine and federal paperwork, and to the DIF-run Senior Homes, which offer workshops, physical activation and psychological care. The federal pension for people over 65, delivered by the Wellbeing Ministry, is also disbursed every two months at points enabled by the federal government.
