Sheinbaum is in Quintana Roo: she toured Jaguar Park, holds today's press briefing from Tulum and unveils a sargassum plan Sunday

The president arrived the afternoon of July 16, met privately with tourism business leaders and will review Maya Train progress; the sargassum announcement is set for Puerto Morelos.

President Claudia Sheinbaum tours Jaguar Park in Tulum during her Quintana Roo visit

President Claudia Sheinbaum began her Quintana Roo tour on Wednesday afternoon, July 16: she landed around 3:00 p.m. at Tulum's Felipe Carrillo Puerto international airport, held a private meeting there and then moved to Jaguar Park, which she toured on foot and by cart, greeting visitors and tourism workers.

Later she led a closed-door meeting with local business leaders on the problems facing the tourism sector, joined by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and state and federal officials. The president stayed overnight in Tulum.

What comes next: today's briefing and Sunday's sargassum plan

  • This Friday, July 17, the morning press briefing ("La Mañanera del Pueblo") broadcasts from Tulum.
  • Over the tour, which runs through Sunday, July 19, the president will review Maya Train progress.
  • On Sunday in Puerto Morelos she will hold a press conference to present a comprehensive sargassum response plan — the announcement most anticipated by the tourism industry and coastal city governments.

As we reported yesterday, the tour agenda also includes a housing event in Cancún under the federal social housing construction program.

Why it matters for Cancún and the Riviera Maya

Mass sargassum landings directly hit tourism jobs — the state's main source of income — and daily life along the coast, so the scope of the federal plan (budget, barriers, open-sea collection and final disposal) will define the response for coming seasons. Presidential visits also typically bring security operations and intermittent road closures: if you travel today or this weekend on federal highway 307 between Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, or through Puerto Morelos on Sunday, leave early and check traffic conditions before setting out.
