Playa del Carmen council member proposes work groups to ease inspections on small businesses

Council member Juan Novelo Zapata called for coordinating all three levels of government to simplify red tape for small businesses.

Council member Juan Novelo Zapata submitted to the Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) city council a proposal to set up work groups that reduce the administrative burden on micro, small and medium-sized businesses (MIPYMES), according to Caribe Peninsular.

The initiative calls for bringing together municipal, state and federal authorities to simplify procedures, coordinate inspections and create incentives for small businesses.

The problem it aims to solve

Per the proposal, small business owners face an "avalanche of inspections" from multiple agencies across the three levels of government —among them the tax authority (SAT), Cofepris, Profeco, the mobility institute and environmental authorities— creating a burden that is hard to sustain.

"Complaints from micro and small business owners are frequent; they are living through an avalanche of inspections from the three levels of government," the council member said, as quoted by Caribe Peninsular.

Among the concrete measures, the proposal includes a work schedule among agencies, a review of protocols, digitization and simplification of procedures, and standardized criteria.

Why it matters

MIPYMES generate seven of every ten jobs in Mexico, so the rules they face directly affect local employment. The proposal must continue its process in the city council before it can, if approved, become concrete action.
