Pemex holds 62.3% of Mexico's gas stations and keeps regular gasoline under 24 pesos
As of May, 8,925 of the country's 14,325 licensed stations operate under the Pemex franchise; in Cancún prices still vary station by station, so it pays to compare before filling up.
The Pemex franchise again dominates Mexico's retail fuel market: as of May 2026, 8,925 of the country's 14,325 licensed service stations operate under its brand — 62.3% of the total — according to industry registry figures reported this month. The state-owned company's network added 49 stations compared with April.
Private brands account for the remaining 5,400 stations. Mobil leads with 713 locations, followed by G500 with 491 and Valero with 337; another 469 stations operate without a commercial flag. Private competition is strongest in Baja California, Coahuila and Nuevo León, while Guerrero has the smallest non-Pemex presence, at just 9% of its stations.
Part of the franchise's strategy has been keeping regular gasoline below 24 pesos per liter, in line with the price-stability commitment agreed between the federal government and station owners.
What it means if you buy gas in Cancún
Pemex and private-brand stations operate side by side in Cancún and the Riviera Maya, and the final price can change from one corner to the next even when most stations respect the voluntary cap on regular. Before filling the tank:
- Compare prices: Mexico's consumer protection agency (Profeco) publishes a weekly fuel-price report, "Quién es Quién en los Precios," and offers the Litro por Litro app to check reported prices by station.
- Check the pump: the per-liter price must be displayed and the receipt should match what was dispensed; complaints about short liters can be filed with Profeco at 800 468 8722.
A one-peso difference per liter adds up to roughly 40 pesos on an average 40-liter tank — meaningful savings for anyone driving daily to the hotel zone or across the city.
