Federal government flags 2,163 gas stations selling diesel above 27-peso cap

Mexico's voluntary price program sets diesel at 27 pesos per liter nationwide and 25.39 along the northern border; PROFECO handles overprice complaints.

The Mexican federal government reported that 2,163 gas stations in the country have not joined the voluntary agreement to keep diesel prices below 27 pesos per liter. According to the official update released on July 13, roughly 80 percent of the country's stations are participating in the program, which sets a national cap of 27 pesos and a special ceiling of 25.39 pesos along the northern border strip.

The states with the most stations flagged are Baja California, with 358 stations; Tamaulipas, with 178; Michoacán, with 166; Jalisco, with 161; and Sonora, with 161. Quintana Roo is not among the states with the highest number of infractions in this report.

The federal scheme is sustained through fiscal stimulus on the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS), preferential terms for card and voucher payments, and competitive pricing from Pemex, along with logistics and security monitoring across the supply chain.

What it means for Cancún consumers

Diesel prices directly affect freight, agriculture and construction costs, and eventually show up in prices for basic goods and services across the Yucatán Peninsula. In Quintana Roo, fuel travels long distances from Gulf coast terminals, so shifts tend to reach local pumps with a lag.

How to report overpricing

Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) receives reports on gas stations that charge above the posted price or dispense partial liters:

  • Consumer hotline: 55 5568 8722 and 800 468 8722 (toll free).
  • Online: the gob.mx/profeco portal hosts "Who's Who in Fuel Prices" with per-station price updates.
  • Email: denunciaspublicas@profeco.gob.mx.

When filing a complaint, keep the receipt, the station's address and, if possible, a photo of the price board.
