Banobras readies up to 80 billion pesos to finance renewable energy projects in Mexico
The development bank's director said most of the funds could be disbursed within 12 months and will back around 30 projects, mostly solar, awarded to 18 companies.
Mexico's National Public Works and Services Bank (Banobras) is preparing a financing package of up to 80 billion pesos —around 4.6 billion U.S. dollars at the reference exchange rate— to back renewable energy projects nationwide. The announcement came from Jorge Mendoza, general director of the development bank.
According to information released on July 13, most of the funds could be deployed over the next 12 months. The package is aimed at roughly 30 recently awarded projects assigned to 18 companies, with a strong tilt toward solar generation.
Banobras and the Ministry of Finance are also studying a unified vehicle that combines public resources, bank credit and capital from institutional investors and pension funds, seeking to lower financing costs and shorten evaluation times. The bank is separately looking at offering cheaper credit to companies that buy machinery or components made in Mexico, in a push to strengthen domestic supply chains.
The federal government has said more financing announcements will follow over the next six months for electricity, oil and gas, roads and ports.
Why it matters for Quintana Roo
The Yucatán Peninsula —Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo— runs an interconnected power system that, given its location and climate, has been a priority ground for large-scale solar and wind projects. A larger pool of renewable financing could translate, over the medium term, into more installed capacity in the region and additional backing for the National Interconnected System during peak-demand season, when Cancun and the Riviera Maya push consumption higher due to air conditioning and tourism occupancy.
The announcement did not specify which states or municipalities would benefit from this initial package.
